The Naples-Marco Island area has terrific beaches and beach fishing!  The beaches stretch along the Gulf of Mexico for about 10 miles and include Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, Clam Pass Beach Park, Naples Municipal Beach & Fishing Pier (Naples Pier), Vanderbilt Beach, North Gulfshore Boulevard Beach, and Lowdermilk Beach Park.  Naples beaches are often ranked in the top 5-10 beaches in America!

There are also a number of both small and very large reserves in and nearby Naples-Marco Island.  They include Corkscrew Swamp SanctuaryEverglades National ParkBig Cypress National Preserve, Florida Panther National Wildlife RefugeTen Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and Picayune Strand State Forest.

Like much of southwest Florida, Naples has barrier islands which mean great fishing!  The breadth of the natural ecosystem near Naples is immense and can’t be fully described in this short post.  Marco Island is the most well known, but Marco Island spills south into the Ten Thousand Islands and unbelievably good fishing!

Other islands include Keywaydin Island, which is the longest unbridged island in southwest Florida and has a lot of natural habitat, and Kice Island and Cape Romano, which are very remote!

Miami Fishing Report, 5/31/2014: Dolphin Fish ~ #Miami

Miami’s fishing report for today:  dolphin fish offshore!

Dolphin fish are a lot of fun to catch offshore on the east coast of Florida!

Please see additional fishing reports, photos and videos at our other fishing report sites for Sanibel, Captiva & Fort Myers.

We report on inshore and offshore fishing in Miami.  Were mostly focused on fishing the channels, grass flats, passes, oyster bars, mangroves and near shore fishing, but we’ll also give you an update on deep sea fishing if a Captain sends us a report!

Consistent with the near shore fishing theme, we post on fishing for redfish, snook, sea trout, pompano, snapper, grouper, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, hog fish and other game fish!

We also report on going after bigger fish, including bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, lemon sharks, sandbar sharks, spinner sharks and black tip and black nose sharks.  We’re very strong proponents of catching and releasing sharks unharmed.

Generally, unless you are going to eat a fish that is in season and of the appropriate size, we say let ‘em go to get bigger, have some fun and catch ‘em again another day!

At the right time of the year, we also post on tarpon, cobia and king mackerel when they are running!

Miami is increasingly one of the capitals of the Caribbean and Latin America, and the culture and fishing is some of the best in the world!  Whether you’re a serious fisherman or woman or a family looking for a great adventure, you are going to like Miami fishing!

Tampa Fishing Report, 5/31/2014: Bull Shark ~ #Tampa

Today’s Tampa fishing report:  bull sharks & tarpon!

We try but it is hard to avoid the sharks when tarpon fishing.

Here’s a big bull shark we caught and released!

Most of the time we fish the flats, passes, oyster bars, inlets and islands.  Sometimes we’ll go offshore a couple of miles or so if we’re fishing for goliath grouper, or tarpon or sharks.

Please see additional fishing reports, photos and videos at our other fishing report sites for Sanibel, Captiva & Fort Myers.

Tampa fishing is some of the best in the world!  A fishing trip is a great family adventure and your children will love it!

The Tampa – St. Petersburg – Clearwater area has some of the nicest beaches in Florida, including Ford Desoto’s North Beach, Caladesi Island and Siesta Key!

Perhaps more important to fishing, the Tampa-St. Pete area has a great coastline structure and topography.  Barrier islands stretch close to 70 miles from North Pinellas to Venice.  In general, barrier islands mean great fishing habitat because they create passes where fish move on the tides in concentrated fashion, and also protected back-bay areas for the overall ecosystem.

On parts of the west coast of Florida, including the Tamps area, the barrier islands also tend to still have large protected mangrove areas.   Mangroves are critical to the whole lifecycle of the ecosystem.  Mangroves are often truly foundational to the formation of the islands and their decaying leaves feed microorganisms that are the starting point of the food chain that leads up to tarpon and sharks at the top of the system!

We’re just getting started in Tampa, but we’re looking forward to reporting on Tampa fishing!
